Bushfire Prone Areas
Under new regulations, many local councils in Australia have been required to prepare maps detailing bushfire prone land in their council area. Where this regulation exists, any new development or significant additions or alterations to a dwelling located within a mapped bushfire prone area now requires that a Bushfire Risk Assessment Report be prepared and attached to the Development Application. New development or additions/alterations within bushfire prone areas must often meet State regulations such as, in New South Wales, the requirements of ‘Planning for Bushfire Protection 2001’. Construction must then conform to Australian Standard AS 3959 ‘Building in Bushfire Prone Areas’ appropriate to the level of risk.
